Palgrave Macmillan, London. | Conference: | Civic and Uncivic Values in Macedonia | Abstract: | According to a popular dictum, democracy means government of the people, by the people, and for the people. But the political process in modern democracies is rarely spontaneous and/or incited from the bottom to the top. The crisis of democracy and global protests apparently display citizens dissatisfied with “democracy without demos.” Nevertheless, the global political landscape is rather complex: while participants of the Arab Spring call for more liberal democracy, the young protesters in the West chant “we are not against the system, the system is against us.” Somewhere in between are the post-conflict Yugoslav successor states. | URI: | http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12188/10310 | DOI: | 10.1057/9781137302823_6 |
